Boys 3/4 Gophers

Regular Season 2011-2012
2011-2012 x Regular Season

GAME 2 - So close, yet, so close....

Some said this Saturdays game was a heartbreaker for the Irondale Gophers, but the brightest of fans said this Saturday was a day to remembered.  The truth, this game was a milestone.  A mark to be called upon for the rest of the season.  Down from the start, the Gophers fought valiantly.  The second half of this game was all Maroon.  In the end, after an 8-0 scoring run and a barely missed buzzer beater, the  Gophers fell just short of winning a great match up.

The coaches were interviewed after game.  Coach Dave was asked if it was difficult to come so close and fall short.  His response was was epic; "These boys are learning to climb a mountain.  Game one, we made a small ascent.  Game two, we put the summit in our sights.  Mount Victory is not far off, and I can think of no other team I would like to harnessed to on that journey."  Coach Bryan put it simply; "These boys played their hearts out.  There is not a quitter on this team, and that makes us winners.  This Thursday there is a lot I will be thankful for and this team is on that list."

Well said Coaches.  I look forward to the next game.

Out of the Gates...

The 3/4 Grade Irondale Gophers In-House team has started the season with unexpected precision and team play.  Earlier today this group of young men stepped onto the battlefield for the first time in the 2011-12 season.  The results were astounding.  Every single player on the team took a shot at the basket, and though not every shot went in, these boys proved fearless.  One spectator noted "Courage is the predecessor to greatness, and these boys have it."

The ball was passed.  The defense had moments of brilliance.  That there was real teamwork afoot was evident, and this is the foundation for all great teams.  When asked his opinion on the game, Coach Findell is quoted as saying "Every season is judged by the growth of the players.  Tonight I can sleep soundly knowing that there was no Gopher that did not do his best."  Coach Kiani had a few choice words as well.  "Today was the first step on a long journey.  Today this team showed me they had heart.  I am proud of each and every one of them.  We may have been outscored, but today we WON the right to call ourselves a team, and because of that tomorrow's victory will be that much sweeter!"

Having covered the league last year as well, I can honestly say that I have yet to see the potential for greatness that I see in this group of young men.  I look forward to following their progress as the season moves forward.
