Recent Boys 3/4 Hawkeyes News

The Hawkeyes evened their record at 2-2 and even more importantly moved to 1-0 vs Irondale teams with an easy 25-9 victory over the Irondale Gophers on Sat. at Highview Sports Arena. The Hawkeyes finally didn't wait until halftime and started the game out strong bolting out to a quick 12-3 halftime lead. The Gophers only score coming on a shooting foul awarded free throw, and a one point victory in the short shot contest. For the game the Knights held the Gophers to only 3 field goals total. Leading the Knights defensively on Saturday was Gary Woodward. He caused the Gopher guards problems all day with his ball pressure and never allowed them to get into their offense at all when they went to his side of the floor.
Offensively you have to start with Jayden Klinke. Jayden scored 14 points on a variety of nice moves going to the basket. Jaxon Behr and Charlie Schumer both each added 4 and Ben Zastrow was awarded 1 on a foul on a shot that I'm positive was going in until said foul. On the rebounding side of things, Jaxon Behr led with 10, and was helped by Jayden Klinke with 4, Jonavan Okoro with 2, and Carlos Momsen, Ben Zastrow and Charlie Schumer  with 1 each.

What a great effort by the boys and they now look to move their Irondale division record to 2-0 next Saturday against another foe from Irondale.

Hawkeyes win second half, but sill come up short

Rough game for the Hawkeyes today. We faced a very good shooting Mounds View team and went down to defeat 38-18. Once again very proud of the boys as they met our halftime challenge and won the second half as was asked of them. Jayden Klinke once again led the Hawkeyes in scoring as he pumped in 8 points. Jaxson Behr and Carlos Momsen each added 4 and Jonavan Okora scored his first youth point ever as he added 2. The rebounding numbers were very impressive for the Hawkeyes as 8 of the 10 boys pulled down a carom. They continue to treat each rebound as if it is their's and only their's. With the loss the Hawkeyes fall to 1-2.

Hawkeyes fall to 1-1

The Hawkeye boys tried valiantly to overcome a poor coaching performance in the first half that saw them behind 17-0 after the first 4 periods were over. And boy did they make it close. It started with a VERY dramatic come from behind, win by a nose win in the relay race that finally enabled them to erase the zero off the board. They were asked at halftime to forget what the scoreboard said and go out and try to win the second half. And win it they did. With each of them playing defense as if the Mounds View boys had each kicked our dogs, they started slowly and methodically decreasing the deficit. They cut the lead to 5, 21-16 at approximately the 2 minute mark but a final basket by the Mounds View team gave us our final score of 23-16. It was an awesome comeback and each boy deserves creit for that.

Jayden Klinke led us in scoring with 6 points, Jaxon Behr  scored 3, Charlie Schumer, and Ben Zastrow each scored 2 points, and Jonavan Okora chipped in with 1. For all except Jayden, it was the  first points they scored as an Irondale basketball player. Hopefully there are many, many more for all of them. Charlie Schumer got the Windex award for sweping the glass clean with 8 rebounds, followed closely by Jaxon Behr with 7 and Jayden Klinke with 6. Ben Zastrow added 2 rebounds and Wyatt Braman and Isaac Landin each added a board apiece.

Coach Pat is still waiting for an explanation from the league offices as to why there was a cover on the east end basket in the first half. The boys put up a lot of very good shots that would not find their way into the basket.
